Problem statement

For d≥2d\geq 2 let Fd(n)F_d(n) be minimal such that every set of nn points in Rd\mathbb{R}^d contains a set of Fd(n)F_d(n) points with distinct distances. Estimate Fd(n)F_d(n) for fixed dd as n→∞n\to \infty.

Background

It is known that

n1/3(log⁡n)1/3≪F2(n)≪n1/2−c\frac{n^{1/3}}{(\log n)^{1/3}}\ll F_2(n) \ll n^{1/2-c}

for some constant c>0c>0. The lower bound was proved by Charalambides [Ch13]. The upper bound was proved by Lee, Pohoata, and Zhu [LPZ26].

Thiele [Th95] proved Fd(n)≫n13d−2F_d(n) \gg n^{\frac{1}{3d-2}} for all d≥3d\geq 3. This was improved to

Fd(n)≫dn13d−3(log⁡n)1/3−23d−3F_d(n) \gg_d n^{\frac{1}{3d-3}}(\log n)^{1/3-\frac{2}{3d-3}}

by Conlon, Fox, Gasarch, Harris, Ulrich, and Zbarsky [CFGHUZ15]. The example of integer lattice points shows that Fd(n)≪n1/dF_d(n)\ll n^{1/d} for d≥2d\geq 2.

Erdős and Guy [ErGu70] consider the problem of determining the maximal size of such a subset of the n1/d×⋯×n1/dn^{1/d}\times\cdots \times n^{1/d} integer grid, showing that it is at least n23d−o(1)n^{\frac{2}{3d}-o(1)} (and at most n1/dn^{1/d}). Lefmann and Thiele [LeTh95] have improved the lower bound to n23dn^{\frac{2}{3d}}.

The case d=1d=1 is the subject of [530], and Komlós, Sulyok, and Szemerédi [KSS75] have proved that F1(n)≍n1/2F_1(n)\asymp n^{1/2}.

See also [1207]. The behaviour of Fd(n)F_d(n) for fixed n≥3n\geq 3 as d→∞d\to \infty is the subject of [1088].
