Problem statement
A family of three distinct sets is a -sunflower (or -system) if
A family of sets is sunflower-free if it contains no -sunflower (equivalently, no sunflower of any size ).
Let and let denote the maximum size of a sunflower-free family . Define
A standard tensor power argument shows that the limsup is in fact a limit:
(see e.g. [TZ2025, (1.2)]).
Existence of the limit
The limit exists. One convenient way to see this is to reduce to uniform families and then apply a tensor-power (direct sum) argument (see also [TZ2025]).
For , let denote the maximum size of a sunflower-free -uniform family , and set
Then
since any family decomposes as the disjoint union of its uniform layers and one layer must have size at least .
Now let be disjoint sets with and , and let and be sunflower-free. Define the product family
Then is sunflower-free. Indeed, suppose that three distinct members () form a -sunflower in . Since and are disjoint, the equalities
imply
and
If two of the coincide, say , then , and uniformity forces . Thus either is a triple of distinct sets forming a -sunflower in , or all three coincide; similarly for the . Since the unions are distinct, at least one of the triples or consists of three distinct sets, giving a contradiction.
Consequently , so is superadditive. By Fekete's lemma, the limit exists. Since and differ by at most the factor , it follows that exists as well.
Trivially .

Background
- Erdős and Szemerédi conjectured that [ES1978]; this was proved by Naslund--Sawin via the polynomial method. [NS2017]
- This constant is also called the Erdős–Szemerédi -sunflower-free capacity; see e.g. [NS2017], [TZ2025].
