Problem statement

Let x1,…,x10x_1,\dots,x_{10} be very general points of P2\mathbb{P}^2, and let π:X→P2\pi:X\to \mathbb{P}^2 be the blow-up of P2\mathbb{P}^2 at these points. Let LL denote the pullback to XX of the class of a line in P2\mathbb{P}^2, and let E1,…,E10E_1,\dots,E_{10} denote the corresponding exceptional divisors. We define

C74 := ε10 := ε ⁣(P2,OP2(1);x1,…,x10),C_{74}\ :=\ \varepsilon_{10}\ :=\ \varepsilon\!\left(\mathbb{P}^2,\mathcal O_{\mathbb{P}^2}(1);x_1,\dots,x_{10}\right),

the multi-point Seshadri constant of OP2(1)\mathcal O_{\mathbb{P}^2}(1) at 1010 very general points. [HR2009-very-general]

Specializing the general multipoint definition to the plane, one gets

ε10 = inf⁡Cdeg⁡C∑i=110mult⁡xiC,\varepsilon_{10}\ =\ \inf_C \frac{\deg C}{\sum_{i=1}^{10}\operatorname{mult}_{x_i} C},

where the infimum runs over all plane curves C⊂P2C\subset \mathbb{P}^2 passing through at least one of the points, and mult⁡xiC\operatorname{mult}_{x_i} C denotes the multiplicity of CC at xix_i. [HR2009-def-plane]

Equivalently,

ε10 = sup⁡{t>0:1tL−(E1+⋯+E10) is nef on X},\varepsilon_{10}\ =\ \sup\left\{t>0 : \frac{1}{t}L-(E_1+\cdots+E_{10}) \text{ is nef on } X\right\},

where “nef” means having nonnegative intersection with every effective curve on XX. [HR2009-nef-alt]

The tabulated lower bounds increase as 4/13<177/560<55/174<117/3704/13 < 177/560 < 55/174 < 117/370. The best established range in the references below is

117370 ≤ C74 = ε10 ≤ 110.\frac{117}{370}\ \le\ C_{74}\ =\ \varepsilon_{10}\ \le\ \frac{1}{\sqrt{10}}.

Background

  • The 55/17455/174 bound is Ciliberto–Miranda's, not Eckl's. It was cited in the 117/370117/370 comment but missing from the table. [Eckl 2011, §0] attributes it explicitly: "a few months ago, Ciliberto and Miranda [CM08] presented a new method to improve these bounds, and obtained 55/17455/174" — their [CM08] is [CM2011] here — and later compares "117/370≈0.31621…117/370 \approx 0.31621\ldots: compared to 55/174≈0.31609…55/174 \approx 0.31609\ldots this is one decimal closer to 0.31622…0.31622\ldots".

  • Conjectural value. For r=10r=10, Nagata predicts the maximal value

ε10 = 110,\varepsilon_{10}\ =\ \frac{1}{\sqrt{10}},

and this remains open because 1010 is not a square. [Gal2025-open-nonsquare]

  • Submaximal-curve formulation. In the plane case, the equality ε10=1/10\varepsilon_{10}=1/\sqrt{10} is equivalent to the non-existence of submaximal curves for 1010 very general points. [Gal2025-upper-submax]

  • Mori-cone formulation. Nagata’s conjecture for r=10r=10 is equivalently the statement that the ray generated by

10 π∗H−(E1+⋯+E10)\sqrt{10}\,\pi^*H-(E_1+\cdots+E_{10})

is wonderful, where HH is the class of a line on P2\mathbb{P}^2 and “wonderful” means an irrational nef ray with self-intersection 00. [Gal2025-mori-ray]
