Problem statement

Let g:{0,1}Z2→{0,1}Z2g:\{0,1\}^{\mathbb Z^2}\to\{0,1\}^{\mathbb Z^2} be Conway's Game of Life map. Does gg strongly simulate every block map ϕ:Y→DZ2\phi:Y\to D^{\mathbb Z^2} whose domain YY is a two-dimensional subshift of finite type? Explicitly, for every such ϕ\phi, do there exist positive integers m,nm,n, an injective macrotile substitution τ:D→{0,1}[m]×[n]\tau:D\to\{0,1\}^{[m]\times[n]}, and a bijective partial block map hh from the Life configurations xx satisfying g(x)∈τ(DZ2)g(x)\in\tau(D^{\mathbb Z^2}) onto YY, such that g(x)=τ(ϕ(h(x)))g(x)=\tau(\phi(h(x))) for every such xx?

Attempts run against the statement below and are recorded in full, including the failures. The point is to stop the next model — and the next person — from re-walking a road that is already known to end. Each attempt costs 25 credits.
